Dr Virjanand Panday

I am from a small town in south Africa called Pietermartzburg. Due to South Africa ‘s history of apartheid and segregation, I grew up in a "non - white"/ Black culture.  This meant living only in designated areas, attending a separate schooling system and having limited access to many of the opportunities available to White people in the country.

I studied at the University of Kwa- Zulu Natal which was based within a large 1000 bed tertiary hospital called King Edward the VIII Hospital and was strictly for non- white/Black people. The university was later named Nelson Mandela Medical School in acknowledgement of the role it played in anti- apartheid movements and eventual dismantling of apartheid. I was privileged and grateful to some people especially my mum who believed I had the potential to finish school and go to university and was very fortunate to have been accepted into medicine.  My wife Aneesa is a pharmacist and we are both the first people in the history of our families to go to university. I left in 1996 to experience working in other countries and health systems. It was never my intention to emigrate from my homeland, however that was the eventual outcome after working in Australia.  Although I am now an Australian, I still have strong bonds with South Africa where all my families live.

I worked in general practices and at the Mater hospital after moving to Mackay and commenced work at ATSICHS Mackay in 2006.

Working at ATSICHS Mackay and in an Indigenous community is special to me as it has been my home away from home.   I feel my background has enabled me to fit into working in the community and was helped by the community and health worker staff who have been very supportive and welcoming to me.  My passion in medicine has been contributing to the growth and development of the health service and improving the health of the community.  I am an advocate for the ACCHS model of care and believe it is the ideal model of care to address the health of the community.

Outside of my work life, I enjoy being a family man, try cooking when I am allowed in the kitchen, try to make myself useful by doing a few handyman jobs around the house and I am still teaching myself to play guitar.

Dr Alex Mclaren

I was born in New Zealand but grew up in the Sunshine coast. I attended University at James Cook University, both here in Mackay. Since then I have worked in Townsville, Mackay, Mount Isa, Hughenden and the Torres Strait but have spent most of my time working for an indigenous organisation in Toowoomba. I have since moved up to Mackay with my family and commenced working at ATSICHS in 2020.

The complexity of medicine is what I enjoy most about being a doctor. It is a new challenge every day and continues to bring new and interesting things before me. ATSICHS and other indigenous health communities I have worked in have always been a warm and friendly focused environment. I value a chance to make a difference to people lives and enjoy the strong relationships I can form with my colleagues and the community.

I have a beautiful wife Jessica and a handsome son Jack, who take up most of my free time. I also have to rescue dogs and why to many bicycles.

Dr Sanjida Akhter

I was born and raised in Bangladesh, I completed my medical degree from the Dhaka Medical College and immigrated to Australia with my family. 5 years ago I have moved from Brisbane to Mackay and have worked in varies places including the Base Hospital, Sarina Medical Centre and of course ATSICHS. I love working at ATSICHS as I feel supportive by the friendly staff and the flexibility to work around my personal life. Since working at ATSICHS I have completed my GP Fellowship exams. I still want to keep learning by working within the Mackay Community and achieve experience in acute and chronic disease management, maternal and chid health, women’s health, travel medicine and Skin Procedures.

Outside of work I am a very strong family person, very attached to my kids. Love to stay connected to my community friends, families here and overseas. I also love cooking, outings, travelling and gardening.
